How often should you wash your hair?

You are probably taking a shower every day, but should you wash your hair every day as well? I used to wash mine every day, especially when it was short. I felt like it was a part of my every day hygiene routine. I felt that I wasn’t clean enough if I hadn’t washed my hair. When I decided to grow long hair, I kept on washing it every day. It became a bit of a struggle actually, because it took me too much time to dry and style it after washing. So, it made my morning routine longer and more stressful. Moreover, it made me think twice about exercising, because I had to wash it for the second time the same day and I was afraid that a second wash could damage it. At some point, I decided to make a research about how often should we wash our hair. I’ve heard a lot of things, but what is actually correct?

After studying many researches and articles written by hairstylists, dermatologists and every kind of expert out there, I concluded that there is no golden rule! It depends a lot on your kind of hair, the shampoo you are using and the life you are living. People with thin oily hair should wash it daily, using a mild shampoo. But people with thick and especially curly hair, can go days without washing. Of course, if you are exercising every day (I envy you and I admire you for that) and you are sweating a lot, washing your hair every day is unavoidable.

Shampoo removes oil from your hair and scalp, together with any kind of dirt or residue coming from your styling products. If your hair is oily, you can probably wash it every day, if you feel the need to do so, the experts advice. If you can wash it every other day, it is even better. But if your hair is regular and especially curly, you should definitely avoid washing it daily. If you do, you will probably make it dry and you will destroy it. Two or three times a week is recommended. The experts agree that you can even go a week without washing it, if you are not sweating a lot (by exercising or other reasons)! It seems a really long time for me, I have to admit it, but many women actually do it. I have even read about women that don’t even use shampoo when washing their hair. They wash it only with water once a week and they occasionally use baking soda. They claim that it is softer and healthier this way. I haven’t tried it myself, so I can’t give you my personal opinion about this. I am all for less chemicals in my beauty routine, but I haven’t gone that far yet. If you have tried it, I would really like to read more about your experience.

When I finally convinced myself that I should not wash my hair every day, I find out that it became actually stronger and more beautiful. And it didn’t get oily either, so I really didn’t have a reason to wash it. If you are washing your hair every day, I suggest you stop it. You will be amazed by the results!

I still wash it at least three times a week though, sometimes every other day, I can’t help myself. I avoid too much heat when I dry and style it and I use always a special oil to prevent it from damaging. I wonder if I will ever become that woman that washes her hair once a week!
