How to use lemons to clean your home

12 ways to use lemons in your house cleaning routines.

I love lemons! I always keep lots of them in my fridge. I use them in my cooking all the time and I certainly love their smell, it’s so uplifting! But I also love using them in my house cleaning. Lemons are great helpers – one of nature’s best gifts! They are natural disinfectants, they fight bad smells and hard water stains effectively.

There are so many ways to use lemons in your cleaning routines.

Here are some of my favorite:

1. Clean your microwave oven

Pour some water (1/2 cup is enough) in a microwave-safe bowl. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon, add it into the bowl and then put also the lemon halve in it. Put the bowl in the microwave oven and set it on at a high temperature for 5 minutes. Then let it rest for another 5 minutes, without opening the oven’s door. The steam will help loosen the food remains. Open the door, remove the bowl carefully, so that you don’t get burned, and wipe the inside of the oven with a piece of cloth. Easy!

2. Clean mold stains from cloths

Make a paste of lemon juice and salt. Rub it on the mold stain and then put the cloth in the sunshine to dry.

3. Bleach your sensitive clothes naturally

Soak your clothes in lemon juice mixed with baking soda for about half an hour before washing them. This is ideal for sensitive white clothes, where you can’t use chemical bleach.

4. Empower your laundry detergent

Add a cup of lemon juice into your washing machine together with your detergent. Lemon juice will remove difficult stains. It’s very efficient in removing rust stains in particular.

5. Clean your cutting board

Take a lemon halve and rub with it your cutting board. This will remove any bad smells and it will disinfect it.

6. Clean your electric kettle

Fill your electric kettle with water and add some lemon juice. Boil the water and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Then empty the kettle and rinse it with water. This will remove hard water build up and any bad smells from your kettle. Repeat the procedure, if necessary.

Lemons can be used in much more ways in house cleaning. The list goes on.

7. Fight bad smells coming from your fireplace

Just drop a few lemon peels into the fire and your home will get a fresh smell instantly.

8. Clean your kitchen sink

Fill your sink with hot water. Cut a lemon in four pieces and put it into the sink. Leave it for at least 1 hour and then rinse the sink. You can also take a lemon halve and rub the sink. This will remove bad smells and hard water stains.

9. Polish copper

Make a paste of lemon juice and salt and then rub your copper items. They will shine again!

10. Remove bad smells from your fridge
