How to emotionally prepare yourself for the holidays

3 easy steps for happy and joyful holidays!

It’s the happiest season of the year, or at least it’s supposed to be. Love and happiness is in the air, nevertheless many people feel depressed or overwhelmed during the holidays. We all have created this perfect picture in our minds and usually we try to live our dreamy holidays, but, guess what, life is far from perfect. And this time of the year we tend to realize this at an unbearable degree. We want to live the dream, but we usually end up facing a crud reality, where we don’t have enough money to spend, or we have to face all that criticism on the family table, or we feel so lonely. Not to mention all the negative self-criticism we subject ourselves to, when the end of the year is near. Here are some easy steps to help you escape the holidays blues.

1. Stay realistic

Dreaming is good, but you also have to take into account your reality. You have to do your best with what you have and this should not upset you. For example, you don’t have to buy everyone expensive gifts, if you can’t afford them, but you shouldn’t feel bad about it. it’s the thought that counts. And don’t forget that love can go a long way, longer than any material gift. Love is the ultimate gift! Focus on the things you can do and enjoy them. You can make your own magic!

2. Plan fun activities

If you have family or social obligations that make you uncomfortable, attend them if you can’t avoid them, but try to make them as short as possible and less difficult for you. Don’t let anyone make you feel guilty or bad, be polite, but stand up for yourself. But make sure also to plan many fun activities that will help you relax and have fun. If you are spending the holidays away from your loved ones, don’t allow yourself to feel miserable. Keep yourself busy and active. Let the holidays spirit get to you!

3. Don’t be your own enemy

Do not allow yourself to be buried under a heavy load of negative self-criticism. Just silence that inner voice that so easily emerges at this time of the year to make you feel sad or even depressed. Just give yourself a break. Stay focused on the positive things and all the things you have achieved. You are worthy of happiness and joy, yes, you are! You may have imagined yourself to be in a different state at this time of the year, but don’t forget that it’s not the destination that matters the most, it’s the journey itself! So, just relax and enjoy yourself! Love yourself, so that you will be able to spread this love around!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Happy Holidays to all of you!

    1. We all have to deal with that voice in our head and it’s not easy. But we are the masters! We shouldn’t forget that. 🙂

  1. Brilliant post its so spot on I think a lot of us are our own worst enemy’s we all definitely have to give ourselves a break from time to time xxx

    1. We should keep a balance with our self-criticism. It can be constructive, but it can also be catastrophic. 🙂

  2. I’m trying not to be own enemy during the holidays because I’m thinking about my Dad and catching up with him during the vacay time. But I can’t. He’s not here anymore. So I take the time to take to my family and friends that are here.

    1. It’s really the hardest period of the year when you’ve lost a loved one. Family and friends can be very helpful, being alone is not an option. <3
