New year’s resolutions and how to accomplish them

8 tips to make your New Year’s resolutions a success

When one year ends, we tend to make all kind of resolutions for the year ahead. It’s time for new beginnings, out with the old and in with the new! Resolutions can help us be more productive, more successful, happier and more pleased with ourselves, provided that we succeed in accomplishing them. Otherwise, the end of the year comes and failure casts its shadow upon us. We often get depressed when we realize that we haven’t achieved our goals and we feel helpless. Well, here are some tips that will help you accomplish your resolutions for the year ahead.

1. Be realistic

Take some time to think of what you want and set a priority list. Choose the most important things for you and go after them! Consider all the factors involved carefully and plan them, while keeping in mind your reality. If you keep on planning a million things, when you actually have time only for a couple of them, then you are heading towards failure. Also, if you divide your energy into a lot of activities, you may find yourself burned out soon. So, you have to be realistic, when setting your resolutions. It’s better to commit yourself to one thing only, the most important one, than commit to a lot of things, only to find out that you can’t keep up.

2. Do it for you

The reason why you chose a specific resolution can either help you or prevent you from achieving it. The most important reason is to do it, because you really want it, because it’s important for you and only you, and not because your family or friends think so. You don’t have to commit to something just because everyone is doing it. If you are doing it for you, you are highly motivated and it’s easier to stay on track.

3. Create steps

No matter what the goal, it’s always easier to accomplish it, if you break it down into smaller steps. Create sub-goals and follow them to the top!

4. Set rewards

You should always reward yourself after achieving a sub-goal. This will keep you highly motivated and it will make you realize that you are making progress.

5. Ask for support

Sharing your resolutions with family or friends can be helpful in many ways, if they are supportive of what you do. They can also act as a reminder, when you are losing your way towards success.

6. Be strong

None said that it’s going to be easy. No matter what the resolution, you need to stay strong and committed to your goal, if you want to achieve it. You should often remind yourself that you can achieve anything you set your heart on, as long as you keep on trying!

7. Don’t give up

You may face failure on your way to success, but you should never give up! You should try again and again, considering what went wrong each time and trying to change it. Fall seven times, stand up eight – one of my favorite quotes!

8. Document your progress

Keep a journal, or create a progress report, so that you can easily remind yourself of all the steps you have taken so far. This will help you stay motivated and it will keep you focused on your goal.

So, go ahead and enjoy the new year! I hope 2017 brings you happiness, success and whatever you have your heart set on! Happy new year!

  1. Fantastic tips! It’s always year after year so that i start the new year with so much new energy but end it far before the year is finishing. Step by step method sounds like a good way to stay focused all year round.

    1. Documenting your progress will surely help you a lot. Let me know about the results! 🙂

  2. Honestly, I stopped making New Year’s Resolutions after graduation from high school. I think it stresses me out mid-year when I feel my resolution won’t come to fruition. I don’t do resolutions now, instead I set goals. And for me to make sure they are achieved, I follow the SMART goal setting method. (S-specific, M-measurable, A-attainable, R-results oriented, T-time bound). Works like a charm for me.

    1. The SMART goal setting method sounds like a good choice. Thank you for sharing it with us! 🙂

  3. Exactly! I don’t set them anymore, just goals. I’m doing it as goals I want to achieve (realistically) by the end of the year, then small changes or steps I can do to get there. Too big steps, mean I’ll fail and give up!

  4. Number one is the best advice. You really need to make your goals realistic. Be honest with yourself about what you really want to improve in your life.
