Well, you know what they say! Love goes through stomach. So, what better way to show your love to your better half, than baking him something special. Valentine’s apple pies! Easy to make and delicious. You can serve them for dessert, or for a Valentine’s breakfast.
Ingredients
650 gr puff pastry, separated in 2 sheets
3 apples
60 gr butter
80 gr brown sugar
40 gr dried yellow raisins
Orange juice of ½ orange
1 shot glass of liqueur Grand Marnier (optional)
A little grated cinnamon
1 egg (for brushing the apple pies before baking)
Preparation time: 50 minutes
Cook time: 35-40 minutes
Put the dried yellow raisins in the liqueur. Pill the apples and cut them into small pieces. Melt the butter in a frying pan in medium heat and then add the chopped apples and the brown sugar. Then add the orange juice, the raisins together with the liqueur (if you are using any, otherwise just the raisins) and mix them all together.
Add a little grated cinnamon and let them cook, stirring them occasionally, in medium heat for 15-20 minutes, until all liquid is absorbed. Then leave it aside to cool.
Preheat the oven at 180o C. Lay a baking sheet on a baking tray. Roll the first sheet of the pastry out. Use a heart-shaped cutter (medium size, I used one 9.5 cm x 11 cm) and cut pastry hearts.
Do the same to the other sheet of pastry as well. You can put a baking sheet on your counter and roll it out there. We are going to use these pastry hearts as a cover over the ones that we have already into the baking pan. (Don’t throw away the leftovers of the pastry, make a new pastry sheet with them and cut also hearts and use them as well).
Use a table spoon and spread the cooked apples in the middle of the pastry hearts that are laying into the baking pan.
Then cover each one with a pastry heart (the ones you cut from the second pastry sheet). Push the edges of the two pastry pieces together with your fingers and then press with fork to seal.
Beat the egg and brush the surface of the pies.
Put them in the preheated oven and cook them for 35-40 minutes.
You can dust them with powdered sugar before serving.
Also you can accompany them with ice cream.
Enjoy them and have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
